Last years Dragon Con costumes. I thought they were beautiful, but the rest of the con just didn’t seem to get it. They were mainly based on the idea of genderbending the costumes from the musical Wicked, but there were elements that were only in Gregory Maguire’s book Wicked: The Life and Times of The Wicked Witch of the West. Fiyero’s (Fiyera’s) diamond tattoos made a subtle appearance, trailing in a spiral up VaVaVoom’s hand to just just behind her ear. Elphaba (Elphabo) had a metallic bee pin in the hatband of his top hat.
I thought certain groups of people at the con would get it immediately and like it. The truth is only three to four people got what we were doing, and most of them were cosplaying as Wizard of Oz characters already. (I saw and was photographed with an awesome Wicked Witch cosplayer.)
We will not be bringing these costumes back to the con. While we do plan to attend, I have a notion for a much more comfortable costume this year, based on something I saw in The Karate Kid, and VaVaVoom will be around 22 weeks pregnant, so dressing up as The Princess of the Arjikis may be beyond her purview. Also, the makeup made this costume horrible to wear around a crowded, warm convention. Great for pictures, though.
I’m not cosplaying as anyone from The Karate Kid, by the way…I was inspired by a concept I saw in the movie. I think everyone will be quite pleased with what we come up with this year.
